Bulldogs' young gun Braith Anasta has engineered a vital away win for his side, scoring two tries and setting up two others in a 46-18 destruction of the Newcastle Knights at Marathon Stadium this afternoon.
The Bulldogs bounced back from their embarrassing 32-0 defeat by the Raiders two weeks ago with an outstanding performance to put the Knights to the sword. Man of the match, winger Hazem El Masri was the recipient of a triple treat, scoring three tries in the final ten minutes against a tired and disorganised Knights outfit.
The afternoon started beautifully for the Knights with Darren Albert and Timana Tahu crossing the line to take the home side to an eight point lead after twelve minutes. That was the last ounce of joy that the Knights would extract from the afternoon however, the Bulldogs dominating every facet of the following proceedings to sound an ominous warning to their Telstra Premiership rivals.
Despite the fact that the Bulldogs scored many of their tries from kicks, they were impressive in all areas as they repelled wave after wave of concentrated Knights attack. Newcastle second rower Ben Kennedy, still smarting after his omission from the NSW side for Origin II, played a lone hand for the home side looking dangerous with the ball whenever in possession.
While it would be presumptuous to write the Knights off for season 2001, a home loss of this afternoon's magnitude will be harder to swallow than a sandwich filled with broken glass. On the other hand, today's effort by the visitors might just see them take the extra step that their rabid fans expect of them.
The Bulldogs led 12-8 at the half. Two tries early in the second half by promising Bulldogs second rower Jamie Feeney put the match beyond reach of the Knights, taking the lead from a tight four to a comfortable sixteen.
