Barry Ward joined Canterbury in 1989 as a second row forward.
After starting the 1990 season late, Barry became a regular member of the Under 21 team and received the opportunity to play first grade against Cronulla as a replacement. He played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1991, Barry played in every game of the Under 21 season including the Premiership winning team against Parramatta as a replacement.
In 1992, Barry started the season in the Under 21 team but progressed to become a regular member of the reserve grade team.
In 1993, Barry was a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the Preliminary Final against Newcastle as a replacement.
In 1994, Barry joined Illawarra to play 12 games that season. In 1995, Barry joined Easts (Roosters) to play two games that season.
In 1997, Barry re-joined Canterbury to be a regular interchange reserve in first grade. He was relegated to play in the reserve grade finals and played in the Premiership winning team against Auckland as prop.
In 1998, Barry was a regular member of the first grade team but was unfortunately suspended during the finals. He played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against North Sydney.
In 1999, Barry returned to play in the Semi-Final against Melbourne and in 2000 was a regular interchange reserve.
In 2001, Barry started the season in reserve grade and after a brief return to first grade, was injured and returned in reserve grade. Barry did not complete the season due to suspension.
In 2002, Barry joined St Helens for two seasons before returning to Canterbury to coach the juniors.
In 2004, Barry was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
Barry is a Life Member of the Football Club and was on the Football Club board from 2008-2011
