Shane Marteene joined Canterbury in 1995 as a centre.
Shane was a regular member of the Under 21 team and started 1996 in reserve grade before receiving the opportunity to play first grade against Newcastle when Steven Hughes was injured.
In 1997, Shane started the season in reserve grade and was promoted to first grade when Rod Silva was relegated. Shane was later relegated for Rod Silva and remained in reserve grade to play in the Premiership winning team against Auckland.
In 1998, Shane started the season in first grade only to be relegated for Steven Hughes. After playing most of the season in reserve grade, Shane returned to first grade for Matthew Ryan for the finals. He played in Grand Final against Brisbane.
In 1999, Shane started the season late and returned to first grade when Willie Talau was injured. Shane returned to reserve grade when Willie Talau returned and played in the reserve grade Semi-Final against Canberra.
In 2000, Shane started the season in first grade but injuries ruined his season.
In 2001, Shane started the season in reserve grade and returned to first grade on the wing when Brett Howland was relegated. He became a regular member of the team and played in the Semi-Final against Cronulla.
In 2002, Shane suffered a knee injury in pre-season and did not play until mid-season and only played a few games before his season ended with another injury.
In 2003, Shane returned to be a regular member of the reserve grade team.
In 2004, Shane joined South Sydney to play 22 games from 2004 to 2005.
Mid-season in 2005, Shane joined St George Illawarra to play two games before retiring.
In 2004, Shane was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
