Willie Talau joined Canterbury in 1998 as a centre.

Willie became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received the opportunity to play in the NRL against South Sydney when Steven Hughes was injured. He became a regular member of the team and played in the Grand Final against Brisbane.

In 1999, Willie was selected to play for New Zealand. He has played 12 Tests for New Zealand from 1999 to 2006. Willie also played in the 1999 Semi-Final against Melbourne.

In 2000, Willie started the season in the NRL but missed much of the season due to a foot injury.

In 2001, Willie was a regular member of the team and played in the Semi-Final against Cronulla.

In 2002, Willie had his best season at the club and was a regular member of the NRL team.

In 2003, Willie started the season in the NRL but was relegated for Ben Harris. He departed the club mid season to join St Helens.

In 2004, Willie was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
