Darren Smith joined Canterbury in 1990 as a second rower.

Starting in reserve grade, Darren received the opportunity to play first grade against St George when Mark Brokenshire was relegated.

Darren became a regular member of the first grade team for the next five seasons.

In 1991, Darren played every game either as a centre or second row that season and played in the play-offs.

In 1992, Darren represented Queensland but received a serious season ending head injury.

Darren played 22 games for Queensland from 1992 to 2002 and played three Tri-Series games for Queensland. He played seven Tests for Australia from 1998 to 2003 and played five Super League Tests.

In 1993, Darren returned to play in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane. In 1994, Darren was a regular member of the first grade team but was relegated for Steven Hughes for the final series. Darren played in the reserve grade Semi-Final against St George.

In 1995, Darren joined Brisbane to play 87 games from 1995 to 1998. He played in the Premiership winning team in 1997 Super League against Cronulla and the 1997 winning World Club Championship against Hunter Mariners. Smith also played in the 1998 Premiership winning team for Brisbane against Canterbury.

In 1999, Darren returned to Canterbury and played in the Semi-Final against Melbourne.

In 2000, Darren spent most of the season in the centres and in 2001, returned to the forwards to play in the Semi-Final against Cronulla.

In 2002, Darren captained the first grade team on one occasion and played his last game as hooker.

Darren joined St Helens from 2003 to 2004 before returning to Brisbane where he was recalled into the Brisbane team in 2004 and 2005 to play a further 18 first grade games before retiring.

In 2004, Darren was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions and is the Chief Executive of the Brisbane Easts Club.
