South Sydney finally lived up to its preseason hype with a powerful 38-16 dismantling of Canterbury in an entertaining round four Easter Monday clash at Sydney's Olympic stadium.
The Rabbitohs' forwards went a long way towards backing up their claim as the best pack in the NRL, as they ran all over a shell-shocked Bulldogs outfit, which only last week piled on 60 points.
On the back of constant forward momentum and bruising defence by its big men, Souths ran in five straight tries to gain a match-winning 26-6 half-time lead before going on with the job in the second stanza.
English recruit Sam Burgess crossed for a first-half double while speedy little men Chris Sandow, Rhys Wesser and Issac Luke had a field day carving up the backwheeling Bulldogs thanks to a tonne of possession.
The rousing result took the Rabbitohs' scoring tally to 68 in back-to-back wins after two losses to start off what has been touted as a breakthrough season at Redfern.
It is the Bulldogs' third loss of their campaign after also starting 2010 with consecutive losses and then appearing to turn things around with an impressive rout over the Roosters in round three.
That form looked like carrying on when Canterbury went 100 metres and five-eighth Ben Roberts dived over for the opening try in just the second minute of play.
But Souths responded by finding touch from the kick-off and form centre Beau Champion strolled through off the scrum base to score his first of two for the night.
After Sandow crossed the stripe the very next set, the Rabbits were forced to show their mettle on their own line against repeated Bulldog sets.
Souths' determined defence withstood the barrage before a 60 metre Luke break saw winger Nathan Merritt dot down in the corner for his side's third try in 20 minutes.
The wave of points continued when Burgess crossed for an easy double in the space of five minutes to round out a whirlwind opening 40 minutes for the Red and Green.
Luke scored the first four-pointer after the break to snuff out any chance of a miracle Canterbury comeback before Bryson Goodwin and Ben Barba added consolation tries for the out-of-sorts Dogs.
Champion snapped up an intercept try on the siren from a Brett Kimmorley pass to cap off his double and a nightmare night for the Canterbury half-back.
