Steve Turner grew up in Erskine Park, New South Wales, and was educated at James Erskine Primary School & St Dominic's College, Penrith.
Steve started playing rugby league as a seven-year-old with Cambridge Park in Sydney's west. Also an under-15 state level touch football player, he was signed by Penrith in 2000. He was a standout for Penrith's Harold Matthews side and won selection in the NSW under-17 team.
In 2001, he was named Penrith SG Ball Player of the Year. He went on to play for NSW under-19s and the Junior Kangaroos and in 2002 he made his first grade debut for Penrith against Melbourne. Steve then signed with Melbourne the next year.
Steve played 105 games between 2004-09 and won the 2007 and 2009 NRL Premierships for the Melbourne Storm.
In 2007, he was to be one of the inaugural members of the newly admitted Gold Coast Titans side after he announced in 2006 that he had signed a new deal to the Gold Coast. Steve agreed to join the Titans until the end of 2009 in June only to later change his mind and re-sign with the Storm for another three years.
Steve played his one and only game for the NSW Blues in game two of the 2008 State of Origin series.
Steve signed with the Bulldogs on a 2 year deal, commencing in 2010 competing for the place left by retiring Bulldogs icon Hazem El Masri.
Steve made his debut for the Bulldogs in Round 1 against Newcastle on March 13, 2010 where he scored two tries.
In 2010, Steve scored his first double for the club in Canterbury's 60–14 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters in round 3.
In 2011, he took over the goal kicking duties when Bryson Goodwin was injured and became a successful goal kicker.
On 27th April 2012, Steve suffered a season ending knee injury.
On 17 March 2013, Steve announced his retirement from rugby league effective immediately due to a recurring knee injury.
