Wests Tigers skipper Robbie Farah struck a vital late blow in the battle for the NSW State of Origin hooking spot by out-pointing bitter rival, Canterbury's Michael Ennis, in a fiercely contested local derby played on a soggy ANZ Stadium on Friday night.

Ennis was solid as his Bulldogs went down 19-12 to the Tigers but Farah was better.

And with the Blues selectors to name the team to play Queensland in Origin Two on Monday night, he may just have done enough to tip the scales in his favour over incumbent Ennis.

Farah scored a solo try and looked sharper around the rucks as the Tihers cemented their spot in the top eight with a third straight win.

The Bulldogs, on the other hand, have now won just three of their 12 games and look at long odds to make the finals.

Luck went against the Bulldogs, with several close calls including a crucial no try after an alleged forward pass in the second half going against them.

But overall the Tigers were the better side and with the bye next week, are well placed to make the finals for the first time since 2005.

Bulldogs centre Josh Morris worried the Tigers throughout and could easily have had a try after just four minutes.

Morris brushed past a couple of lazy Tigers tacklers and lunged for the tryline as the last-ditch defence swooped.

Video referee Bill Harrigan couldn't make a ruling and sent it back to the man in the middle, Shayne Hayne, who ruled that Morris was stopped centimetres short of the paint.

But Morris made amends in the 21st minute and this time there was no doubt.

Veteran skipper Andrew Ryan, who it was revealed could be heading to England at season's end, made a fine break from 20 metres out, and turned the pass back inside to Morris.

The flying centre planted the ball between the posts, achieving a career milestone as he did his 50th career try.

Winger Bryson Goodwin converted from a simple position for a 6-0 lead.

The Tigers defence had another scare soon afterwards when fullback Beau Ryan let a long kick from Bulldogs hooker Michael Ennis go over the deadball line.

Giant Bulldogs centre Jamal Idris swooped, but luck again favoured the Tigers, with replays showing the ball just touched the out line as Idris grounded it.

The Tigers hit back late in the half after Bulldogs full-back Luke Patten made a crucial error in the difficult conditions.

Tigers playmaker Benji Marshall put in a grubber kick and Patten rushed in his bid collect it, producing a fumble.

Rookie Tigers forward Simon Dwyer picked up the crumbs and offloaded to the alert Marshall, who plunged over.

Marshall added the extra to ensure the teams went to the break locked at 6-all.

The Bulldogs edged ahead 12-6 when Ryan pounced on a Brett Kimmorley kick early in the second half before the Tigers dominated the final 20 minutes.

Farah levelled the score when he barged over from dummy-half, with half-back Robert Lui breaking the deadlock with a field goal nine minutes from the finish.

Rookie Simon Dwyer then capped a fine win for the Tigers when he charged onto a sweetly timed Marshall pass to score.
