The Bulldogs on Friday returned to the top of the National Rugby League (NRL) standings for the first time since they were docked 37 competition points last season for a salary cap breach.

The Bulldogs smashed Parramatta 30-10 at Stadium Australia for their 22nd victory in their last 25 premiership games.

The competition favourites piled on five first-half tries to have the match sewn up at 28-4 before half time.

Dynamic centres Matt Utai and Nigel Vagana ran in a try each, while Mark O'Meley, Luke Patten and Hasem El Masri also scored tries for the Dogs.

El Masri also kicked two penalties and three conversions.

Parramatta showed some fight after the interval but not nearly enough to stop the Bulldogs from rising above the premiership pack seven-and-a-half months after their massive penalty which ended their finals' chance last year.

For Parramatta, Ashley Graham and Jason Moodie crossed.

The match ended in driving rain, but the Eels could hardly blame the conditions for a disappointing performance before almost 25,000 fans.

The Eels are now one from four this season and have won just four of their last 18 matches since round 13 last year.
