Canterbury-Bankstown has returned to the winners' circle in emphatic fashion with a convincing 24-4 victory over a committed Wests Tigers at the SFS.
Despite their total dominance in the opening stanza, the Bulldogs had only a 6-0 lead to show for their efforts as the Tigers repeatedly denied the visitors in a memorable defensive display.
The leg-weary Tigers looked in desperate trouble when Luke Patten doubled the advantage in the 47th minute before Lote Tuqiri crossed to set up a thrilling finish in front of a frenzied 19,491 crowd.
But the Bulldogs had the final say with Michael Ennis and Brett Kimmorley both crossing in the final sixth minute to post their second victory of the season.
The loss ends the Tigers' winning run at four matches, but their defensive display alone was enough to suggest they are genuine title contenders in 2010.
After a cautious start from both sides the Bulldogs began to dominate both territory and possession.
Skipper Andrew Ryan looked certain to open his side's account in the eighth minute only to be denied by desperate defence from Beau Ryan and Liam Fulton.
It was a sign of things to come as the Bulldogs launched countless assaults on the Tigers' line without troubling the scoreboard attendant.
A combination of basic Tigers errors and some questionable decisions from the match officials allowed the Bulldogs to set up camp in enemy territory for the bulk of the opening stanza.
Yileen Gordon was next to come within centimetres of the line thanks to a try-saving tackle from Bryce Gibbs.
It was one of 19 tackles the Tigers were forced to make inside their own 22 in a lop-sided first 20 minutes.
Having barely touched the ball in enemy territory, the Tigers almost scored from their first genuine attacking raid when Robbie Farah sent a kick down the blindside for Benji Marshall who appeared to be tackled without the ball.
Momentum stayed with the visitors as try-scoring machine Josh Morris found his way over the line in the 29th and 32nd minutes, only to be denied by some more stirring defence from the hosts.
The Bulldogs finally opened their account in the 35th minute when Idris deflected a towering Ben Roberts bomb to Michael Ennis for the simplest of tries.
Goodwin converted for a 6-0 lead, and that's how it stayed at the break.
The Bulldogs extended the advantage seven minutes in when Patten danced past three defenders on the way to the line.
Goodwin, who set up Patten's strike with a brilliant 50m run, added the extras from close range to double the advantage.
The 184 tackles the Tigers had to make in the first half appeared to be catching up with the hosts, but a moment of magic from Tuqiri breathed new life into the contest.
The dual international proved he still has speed to burn as he steamed on to the ball from just inside halfway and stepped past Patten on the way to line and his sixth four-pointer of the campaign.
But it was too little too late for the Tigers.
