Canterbury has come up short against a Jarryd Hayne inspired Parramatta outfit, losing 32-16 at ANZ Stadium on Friday night.

Hayne scored twice inside the first six minutes and had a hand in two other tries in a dominant first half that saw the Eels fly out to a 28-4 lead at the break.

The 22-year-old also showed his freakish ability in defence, denying David Stagg a try with a sensational last-ditch tackle late in the second-half as the Bulldogs were threatening a comeback.

It would have seemed almost inconceivable that the mercurial No.1 could match his deeds of last season when he produced a remarkable run of form that took him to the Dally M Player of the Year and the Eels to the grand final.

But on the evidence of this match the 'Hayne Train' is just getting started as he took his brilliance to another level in front of 34,662 appreciative fans.

It was the eighth time the Eels have defeated the Bulldogs in their last nine meetings and ensures last year's similar late fairytale run to the finals is a possibility.

It took less than a minute for Hayne to impart his class on the match, scoring with his very first touch with a try that invoked memories of his solo classic against the Dragons in last year's finals series.

After the Eels had gone 70m downfield on their first four tackles, Hayne then took over, bumping out of a Michael Ennis tackle before running across field and slicing through a gap between David Stagg and Ryan Tandy.

Bulldogs full-back Luke Patten tried to shutdown the brilliant No.1 but a simple right-foot step allowed Hayne to score beside the posts. Luke Burt's conversion made it 6-0.

Hayne had his second just five minutes later, finishing off a neat move that started on the Eels' own 30m line.

Parramatta centre Timana Tahu, in his first match back from a four-game suspension, brushed out of Shane Neumann's feeble attempt at a tackle before throwing an inside pass to Burt who raced downfield where he found Hayne in support to score in an almost identical spot.

The Bulldogs defence simply had no answer to Hayne's pace and creativity and it was no surprise that he was involved in the Eels' third try after just 11 minutes.

Receiving the ball 15m out from the try line, Hayne ran to the Canterbury defence before cutting out two players with a bullet pass to winger Krisnan Inu to dive over out wide. Burt's conversion attempt sailed wide but the visitors were still cruising at 16-0.

Canterbury was desperate for some respite and gave itself some hope when veteran half-back Brett Kimmorley hit back six minutes later.

Backing up a strong charge by Ben Hannant, Kimmorley, playing his 301st NRL match, received the prop's pass before out-pacing Daniel Mortimer to the line. Bryson Goodwin hit the post with his shot at goal leaving the score at 16-4.

But it was just a minor hiccup for the Eels as Hayne was again involved in Inu's second try (25th minute) before back-rower Ben Smith got in on the act (30th) as they increased their lead to 28-4 at the break.

The Bulldogs came out with much more enthusiasm after the break and gave themselves a glimmer of hope by posting the first try in the 48th minute.

Ben Barba's midfield bomb was contested by Josh Morris and Hayne, with the ball flying backwards off the Canterbury centre for Barba to dive on the loose ball.

That try gave the home side a big lift and they gave themselves a chance of pulling off an unlikely comeback when skipper Andrew Ryan burrowed over with 23 minutes left. Goodwin's conversion brought the score back to 28-16.

But a brace of Burt penalty goals inside the last 18 minutes snuffed out any chance of a fightback and ensured the Eels would claim the valuable two competition points.
