The Bulldogs have made it four wins in a row with a hard-fought 30-20 win over the Raiders in Canberra this afternoon.
In cold conditions the Bulldogs were down 12-0 early and could have easily been further behind before Daryl Millard crossed the line after some good lead-up work from Ben Roberts to get the Doggies started.
The Bulldogs were their own worst enemy in the opening stages of the match and they continued that trend from the kick-restart when Ben Roberts turned from hero to villain when he fumbled the ball touch in-goal.
The Raiders made the Bulldogs pay when Purtell strolled over out wide to get the home side back in front by 10 points with 15 minutes remaining until the break.
Penalties were hurting the Dogs early but once they got their discipline right they found themselves creating opportunities late in the first half.
Former Broncos team mates Michael Ennis and Ben Hannant then combined close to the line, with Ennis delivering a short ball to Hannant who scored under the posts. El Masri made no mistake from right in front and with less than 10 minutes remaining the scoreboard read 16-12 in favour of the Raiders.
Both sides shared the possession in the final minutes but it was the Bulldogs who managed to hit the lead for the first time in the match with less than a minute left on the clock. Bryson Goodwin made it six tries from seven starts when he squeezed over out wide. Hazem nailed the conversion from out wide once again and as the two sides entered the sheds it was the visitors ahead 18-16.
After a first half which produced 34 points it was a surprise to see the scoreline unchanged for the next 22 minutes as both sides got back into the thick of things. The Raiders applied plenty of pressure with repeat sets close to the Bulldogs line, however, the Dogs were tight across the park and denied the Raiders points.
A piggy-back penalty up-field following their defensive effort brought the Bulldogs within striking distance and it was Michael Ennis who did the damage when he snuck over from dummy-half to extend the Bulldogs lead. El Masri made it four-from-four and the Bulldogs now led 24-16 with less than 20 minutes remaining.
The Bulldogs went close to scoring once again but like so many times before the advantage changed very quickly and before they knew it the Raiders were crossing the try line through Alan Tongue. The veteran found his way over the line but rookie fullback Josh Dugan managed to miss an easy conversion to keep the margin at four points.
The final minutes of the game were tense as both sides looked to take the game but it was the Bulldogs who took the cake with Michael Ennis again involved. With less than two minutes on the clock Ennis grubbered close to the line finding a flying Hazem El Masri who did very well to ground the ball. He then converted his own try and the Bulldogs came away 30-20 victors in an entertaining game of rugby league.
