Moses Mbye scored on the stroke of full-time before debutant Kerrod Holland kicked the matchwinner after the siren to give the Bulldogs a remarkable win on Thursday night.

Penrith ambushed the Bulldogs pack to race out to a 14-0 lead inside 20 minutes before Canterbury fought back to trail by four with 20 minutes remaining.

Bulldogs captain James Graham faces a suspension for a shoulder charge on Reagan Campbell-Gillard, while Canterbury prop Aiden Tolman suffered a concussion early in the first half and did not return.

Penrith winger Dean Whare failed to finish the match after aggravating the calf injury that kept him out of round one.

Canterbury debutant Holland celebrated his maiden NRL appearance by kicking the Bulldogs to victory after the siren in a pulsating match.

In a fairytale finish to the debut of the boy from Singleton, Holland overcame a mountain of pressure to convert the Mbye try on the stroke of full-time, making no mistake with his kick from 15 metres in from touch to secure an 18-16 win.

The former Newcastle junior, who joined the club in the pre-season, finished the match as the hero, but it was the efforts of Mbye that ensured Canterbury would continue their winning start to the season.

‘‘This is outstanding,’’ Holland said after the match. ‘‘They knew it was going over. It was always going over ... I knew we had it won, as soon as he [Mbye] went over, I had all the confidence in the world.’’

It was a tough night for the Canterbury big men, with Graham’s front row partner Aiden Tolman failing to return to the paddock after leaving the field in the 17th minute with concussion.

Last week the Bulldogs strolled out to Brookvale Oval and ambushed the Sea Eagles. Six nights later they were the ones who were ambushed in a dominant opening 20 minutes from a fired-up Penrith.

All the talk in the lead up to the match was about the giant Bulldogs pack and how difficult of an assignment they would be for any team to overcome this season.

But the young Panthers pack didn’t take a backward step, forcing mistakes with brutal defence and making plenty of inroads through the heart of the Canterbury defence.

It was the boot of Jamie Soward that led to opening points, with former Manly back Peta Hiku winning the race to the ball to give Penrith a 6-0 lead inside five minutes.

The home side doubled their lead soon after when Sam McKendry crashed over from close range.

Graham’s minor brain explosion, a shoulder charge on Campbell-Gillard from a goal-line drop out, allowed Soward to extend the lead beyond two converted tries with a penalty goal in the 21st minute.

The Bulldogs didn’t take long to hit back when Sam Kasiano put Mbye into space, paving the way for Will Hopoate to score and reduce the margin to 14-6.

The Panthers pushed out to a 10-point lead courtesy of another Soward penalty goal, before they were denied a four-pointer to Josh Mansour after he was ruled to be accidentally offside when a kick bounced off the head of Hiku.

Mbye reduced the deficit to just four points when he showed great strength to carry defenders over the line mid-way through the second half, before he grabbed his second and the win on the stroke of full time.
