In 2008, James Graham was named Man of Steel, Writers Player of the Year, the only British player in the World XIII and named best prop in the world.
In 2009 he managed another outstanding year with another appearance in the World XIII and he repeated that in 2010.
As a junior player, James was marked for great things and at a tender age he already became the real go to player at St. Helens. He signed with the Saints as a junior in 2000, progressing through the junior ranks before making his debut against Castleford Tigers in August 2003. He captained England Academy in a famous series victory in Australia the following year.
Super League X proved to be a real breakthrough season for the Liverpool-born Evertonian, making 27 appearances and being named Saints Young Player of the Year, for his mature, powerful performances. In 2006 he was named Young Player of the Year, Saints' Young Player of the Year and Saints Supporters Young Player of the Year. And 2008 yielded more accolades with his performances in the World Cup earning rave reviews from all over the world. He gained top metre awards in 2009 and 2010 and was named England captain in 2010 Four Nations campaign.
On the 27th of April 2011, James agreed to join the Bulldogs for the 2012 NRL season on a three-year deal.
The English prop made his debut for the blue-and-whites in Round 1 against Penrith and managed to set-up a Ben Barba try along with 16 hitups and 51 tackles off the bench.
He played 26 games in his debut NRL season and was part of the Bulldogs team which lost the Grand Final to Melbourne Storm.
After Canterbury captain Michael Ennis was ruled out of the 2014 NRL Grand Final due to a foot injury, James along with teammate Trent Hodkinson were named co-captains of the Bulldogs for the match.
At the Bulldogs 2015 season launch, James was named the club captain for the club's 80th season, replacing former rake Michael Ennis. It was also announced that the Englishman will be joined in the role with newly appointed vice-captains, Aiden Tolman and Frank Pritchard.
On 1st August 2015, James was named in the team of the decade as part of the clubs 80th Year celebrations.
On the 15th May 2016, James played his 100th game against the Wests Tigers.
On the 5th of September 2017, James signed a 3 year deal with St George Illawarra commencing in 2018.
