Junior Tia-Kilifi was born in Auckland, New Zealand. He attended Chifley College in Mt Druitt, and St Dominics College in Penrith, and played for the school team. He played his junior footy for the Minchinbury Jets.

Junior put in the hard yards at Toyota Cup level, where he demonstrated his blistering pace and classy footwork.

Junior scored a try on his NRL debut in Round 17 of the 2009 season for Penrith against Parramatta. He went on to play another 7 games at the top level and finished the season with 16 points. 

Junior left Penrith at the end of the 2009 season to sign a two-year contract with the Bulldogs, commencing at the start of the 2010 season.

In 2010, Junior made his first grade debut for the Bulldogs after centre Josh Morris was ruled out with a fractured eye socket, against Parramatta where he scored a late four pointer.

In 2010, Junior was a member of the Bulldogs NSW Cup premiership winning team against Windsor.

At the end of the 2011 season, Junior moved back to Penrith.
