Trent Hodkinson a Cabramatta junior, was the Sea Eagles feeder club player of the year in 2009 and made his first grade debut for Manly against Parramatta in round 2 of the 2010 NRL season. His rise was swift and impressive enough to gain selection in the City Origin team.

After 24 appearances in 2010 for the Sea Eagles, Trent inked a three-year-deal with the Bulldogs.

In Round 1 of the 2011 NRL season, Trent made his Bulldogs debut against the Wests Tigers, playing at half back in the Bulldogs' 24-14 win at ANZ Stadium. He scored his first Bulldogs try in Round 7 against the South Sydney Rabbitohs, in the Bulldogs' 36-24 win at ANZ Stadium. In Round 20 against the Parramatta Eels at ANZ Stadium, he repeated his feat of the previous year and kicked 2 field goals in the Bulldogs' golden point extra time 8-7 win. He finished off 2011 having played in 22 matches, scoring 2 tries and kicking 3 field goals.

The 2012 season was injury interrupted by only playing in 6 matches,after undergoing shoulder and knee operations.

Trent played his first match for Bulldogs in the 2013 season in Round 6 against the Sydney Roosters at SFS in the Bulldogs 38-0 loss. Trent was appointed the new goal kicker for the Bulldogs due to his impressive goal kicking when he was bidding his time the NSW Cup. On 4 September 2013, Trent re-signed with the Bulldogs until the end of the 2015 season.Trent finished the 2013 NRL season with him playing in 20 matches, scoring 4 tries, kicking 64 goals and kicking 3 field goals.

In 2014 season Trent shined on multiple occasions to get the Bulldogs to seven successive victories. Trent was subsequently selected to make his State of Origin debut for New South Wales in Game I of the 2014 series. He and fellow Bulldogs player Josh Reynolds replaced the incumbent halves pairing of Mitchell Pearce and James Maloney for the 2014 series and led NSW to a 12-8 victory in Game 1 at Suncorp Stadium. Trent was called up to the Blues squad again for Game 2. After 71 minutes of play Trent crossed over to score the match's first try, to level the scores with the Maroons. A conversion decided the score 6-4. The Blues held on to win after eight years of Maroon dominance, with Trent scoring the Blues only points. Trent played in Game 3, kicking 2 goals in NSW 32-8 loss at Suncorp Stadium. Trent led the Bulldogs into the Top 8 at the end of the season. During the Bulldogs vs Melbourne Storm Elimination Final round, kicked 4 goals and scored a try to assist his team to a 28-4 win. In the Semi-Final the Bulldogs played a close game with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, with Trent kicking two field goals to win for the Bulldogs 18-17. In the Preliminary Final the Bulldogs beat the Penrith Panthers 18-12 with Trent kicking 3 goals to secure their place in the 2014 NRL Grand Final. In the week leading to the Grand Final, when Canterbury captain Michael Ennis was ruled out of the 2014 NRL Grand Final due to a foot injury, Trent along with team mate James Graham were named co-captains of the Bulldogs for the match. Trent kicked 1 goal in the Bulldogs 30-6 Grand Final loss. Trent finished his 2014 NRL season for the Bulldogs with him playing 25 matches, scoring 5 tries, kicking 68 goals and kicking 4 field goals.

In Round 3 against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles in 2015, Trent played his 100th NRL match in the Bulldogs 16-12 win at Brookvale Oval. Trent played at half back and was the main goal kicker in all 3 matches for the New South Wales Blues in the 2015 State of Origin series loss. Trent was subsequently dropped from the NSW side for the 2016 series.

On 6 July 2015, Trent signed a 3-year contract with the Newcastle Knights starting in 2016. In Round 24 against his future club, Trent suffered a season ending wrist injury in the Bulldogs 20-18 win at Hunter Stadium. He finished off his last year with the Bulldogs having played in 19 matches, scoring 1 try, kicking 47 goals and kicking 1 field goal.

On 1st August 2015, Trent was named in the team of the decade as part of the clubs 80th Year celebrations.
