Tony McWilliam joined Canterbury in 1979 as a prop forward.

In 1980, Tony became a regular member of the Under 23 team and maintained his position for three seasons.

In 1982, Tony started the season in Under 23s and midseason became a regular member of the reserve grade team. He received the opportunity to play first grade as a replacement against Manly.
