Tony Armstrong played two games for Western Suburbs from 1979 to 1980 as a winger.

Tony joined Canterbury in 1982 and became a regular member of the first grade team when injuries occurred to Chris Anderson and Steve Gearin.

In 1983, Tony started the season in first grade but was relegated for Ross Conlon.

Tony returned to first grade during the final series when Ross Conlon suffered a dislocated hip and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.

In 1984, Tony joined Cronulla to play 23 games that season and was the competitions leading point scorer with 186 points.

After missing 1985 due to injury, Tony joined Illawarra in 1986 to play six further games in first grade.
