Tom Lyons joined Canterbury in 1939 as a centre.

After missing the 1940 season, he returned in 1941 to be a regular member of the reserve grade team.

Tom received an opportunity to play first grade due injuries in the backline. He played in the semi-final against Easts (Roosters) on the wing.

At the end of World War II, Tom returned to the club for a short spell in the lower grades.
