Tom Cooper played one first grade game for Balmain in 1961 as a goal kicking fullback.

In 1962 Tom joined Canterbury, commencing in third grade and progressing to reserve grade mid-season. He received the opportunity to play first grade against Manly when Bill Petley was injured. He played in the 1962 reserve grade Semi-Final against Parramatta.

In 1963, Tom was the regular fullback in reserve grade and played in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney. He started the 1964 season in third grade as a second row forward.
