Tom Carey joined the club in the inaugural year after playing 15 first grade games with St George from 1932 to 1934.

Tom played in the initial first grade game as half back and maintained that position playing in all of the games for the season.

Tom is credited with kicking the first goal in first grade.

He was rewarded for his efforts in a tough season by taking over the captaincy of the team when Jack Morrison was injured. He captained seven games in 1935.

With the recruitment of George Mason in 1936, Tom found himself in reserve grade for most of the season. He then left to join the struggling University club.

Tom closed his first grade career by playing in University's last first grade game and ironically, this was against Canterbury.
