Terry Johnston joined Canterbury in 1963 as a centre.

After a late start to the season, Terry only played one reserve grade game as captain before making his first grade debut against St George when John Burns was injured. He returned to reserve grade to play in the Preliminary Final against South Sydney.

In 1964, Terry commenced the season in first grade and became a regular member of the first grade team.
