Steve Want joined Canterbury in 1980 as a winger.
After being a regular member of the Under 23 team, Steve progressed quickly through the grades and received the opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney in 1981, when Chris Anderson was injured.
In 1982, Steve started in reserve grade and played more first grade games due to Chris Anderson's absence.
In 1983, Steve became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the Semi-Final against St George.
In 1984, Steve started in reserve grade but finished the season in third grade.
In 1985, Steve joined Western Suburbs to play one more game in first grade.
