Steve O'Brien joined Canterbury in 1983 as a centre.

In 1984, Steve became a regular member of the reserve grade team as a centre before receiving the opportunity to play first grade against Illawarra as a replacement.

Steve played in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta.

In 1985, Steve started the season in first grade but was relegated mid-season when Chris Mortimer returned from injury. He played in the Reserve grade Semi-Final against Canberra.

In 1986, Steve returned to first grade and played in the Grand Final against Parramatta.

In 1987, Steve season was impacted by injury. In 1988, Steve started the season late but did play in the first grade Semi-Final against Cronulla when Tony Currie was injured.

In 1989, Steve joined Balmain to play 58 games from 1988 to 1992 including the 1989 Grand Final against Canberra.

In 2004, Steve was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
