Steve Gearin joined Canterbury in 1975 as a goal kicking five eighth.

The brother of Paul and Greg Gearin, Steve became a regular member of the under 23s team, mainly playing on the wing. Steve played in the Preliminary Final against Balmain.

In 1976, Steve became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received the opportunity to play first grade against Western Suburbs as a replacement. 

Steve's 1977 season was ruined by injury but Steve returned in 1978 to become a regular member of the first grade team playing on the wing.

Steve was to secure a position in first grade for the next five seasons. In 1978, Steve played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.

In 1979, Steve was the competitions leading point scorer with 244 and beat George Taylforth's 1967 record of 204 points in the process.

Steve played in every match including the Grand Final against St George.

In 1980, Steve played in the Premiership winning team against Easts (Roosters) and is remembered for the remarkable try that was scored off a Greg Brentnall kick to secure victory. Steve scored 15 points on Grand Final day.

In 1981, Steve was the competitions leading point scorer and in 1982, became the first Canterbury player to score 1000 points for the club despite missing several games due to injury.

In 1983, Steve joined St George to play 47 games from 1983 to 1984.

Steve returned in 1985 and reached 1000 first grade points for the club. He joined Manly in mid-season in 1986 to play one first grade game to close out his career.

Steve was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions in 2004.

In 2020, Steve was awarded Life Membership of the Football Club.
