Russell Kelly joined Canterbury in 1943 as a second rower. Progressing through the grades, Russell was able to secure a first grade position.

After an absence of two years, Russell returned to the club securing a reserve grade position.

With the injury to George Kilham, Russell was able to play the last six first grade games which included the final against Balmain.
