The older of three brothers to play for Canterbury, the others being Reub and Arthur, Roy was a second rower that could play prop when required.

Roy joined Canterbury in the inaugural season playing his initial game in reserve grade in the third match of the season.

Injuries provided Roy the opportunity to play first grade.

After playing 1936 in reserve grade, Roy was able to secure a first grade position from 1937 to 1939, playing in the 1938 premiership winning first grade team and semi final team in 1939.

In 1940, after playing in the three initial first grade games, Roy departed the club to play for Waratah Mayfield in Newcastle. He returned the next year to play the full season in reserve grade.

Roy made a brief return in 1946 and 1947 before retiring.

In 2004, Roy was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
