Ron Thornton joined Canterbury in 1955 as a half back. On occasions Ron would also played five eighth.

The brother of Brian Thornton, Ron progressed through the grades in 1955 and received his first grade opportunity against Balmain.

Ron became a regular member of the first grade team for the next six seasons and played in the semi-final against Easts (Roosters) in 1960.

In 2004, Ron was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
