Ron Smith played 15 games for Manly between 1947 and 1950. He was the half back in Manly's inaugural first grade game.

In 1951, Ron joined Canterbury to play half back in the lower grades. He received an opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney.

In 1952, Ron commenced the season as the regular half back in first grade but by mid season was relegated for Laurie White. He played in the 1952 reserve grade Grand Final against South Sydney.

Ron was a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1953 and departed the club to play for Newtown in 1954 where he played three first grade games.

Ron returned to Canterbury in 1955 and played two more seasons in the lower grades, mainly in the second row.
