A goal kicking winger Ron joined Canterbury in 1941 and was used as a utility, playing wing, centre and five eighth.

In 1942, Ron's only game in first grade was the 1942 Grand Final against St George. A backline reshuffle, due to an injury to Roy McCarter gave Ron the opportunity of playing in the 1942 Premiership winning team.
