Ron Ellis joined Canterbury in 1965 as a five eighth.

After progressing through the grades, he received his opportunity in first grade against Balmain late in the season when Doug McManus was relegated. Ron played centre in first grade.

Ron became a regular member of the third grade team in 1966.
