Ron Costello played 14 games for Western Suburbs between 1964 and 1965 as a second row forward.

In 1967, Ron played for NSW while playing for Collegians in Wollongong. He toured New Zealand in 1969 and 1971 with the Australian team. Ron played eight games for NSW between 1967 and 1971 along with three Tests for Australia between 1969 and 1971. Ron played in the 1970 World Cup.

He joined Canterbury in 1970 and played in the winning Pre-Season Final against St George. Ron became a regular first grade player for three seasons, playing in the Semi-Final against St George.

Ron played consistently in 1971 and 1972 and returned to the South Coast in 1973.

In 2004, Ron was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
