Rex Beath joined Canterbury in 1953 as a second row forward.

After a two season break, Rex returned to Canterbury in 1956 to become a regular member of the reserve grade team over the next two seasons.

He received an opportunity to play first grade when Alan Lynch was injured. Rex played prop in this match.
