Ray Payne joined Canterbury in 1970 as a prop forward.

He progressed through the grades and received his opportunity to play first grade against Penrith when Dennis Manteit was injured.

Ray was unfortunate to miss the Semi-Final against St George when he was injured a week earlier.

After receiving a fractured skull in 1971, Ray returned to play in the third grade Premiership winning team against St George.

He became a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1972 and played in the Premiership winning team against St George.

Ray continued in reserve grade in 1973 to play his final game in the Semi-Final against Newtown.
