Ray Newton joined Canterbury in 1958 as a second row forward.

After brief stints in his first two seasons, Ray became a regular member of the third grade team in 1960, playing prop.

He captained the third grade team in 1961 before becoming a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1962 where he played in the Semi Final against Parramatta.

In 1963, Ray maintained his position in the reserve grade team and received his opportunity to play first grade against Manly late in the season when John Conna was relegated.

After making a late start in 1964, he played his final matches for the club in reserve grade.
