Ray Kear joined Canterbury in 1976 as a goal kicking winger.

Ray was a regular member of the Under 23 team playing centre and fullback. He played in the Grand Final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1977, Ray became a regular member of the reserve grade team before receiving the opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney when centre Mark Hughes was injured.

Ray was used mainly on the wing and was relegated later in the season for Steve Gearin.

In 1978, Ray made a late start to the season but did become a regular member of the reserve grade team as a centre.

In 1979, Ray started the season in reserve grade but was injured before the finals.
