Ray Gartner joined Canterbury in 1952 as a five eighth.

The son of Joe Gartner and cousins of Jim, Clive and Keith Gartner, Ray would often play half and centre.

He was a regular member of the first grade team for 11 seasons from 1953 to 1964. In 1956, Ray played for Port Kembla in the Illawarra competition.

In 1955, Ray became the regular captain of the first grade team. He was also appointed captain in 1958, 1963 and 1964. Ray captained Canterbury on 71 occasions.

In 1953, Ray played two games in the Possibles v Probables matches and in 1958 captained the NSW Colts team.

Ray's halves combination with Ron Thornton first commenced in 1955 and their last game together was in 1962.

Ray's only semi-final series was in the play-off of 1960 and after a long career was rewarded as the Herald's Player of the Year in 1963.

Ray became a Life Member of the Club.  

Ray passed away in 1983. 

In 2004, Ray was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
