Ray Beaven played 10 games for Easts (Roosters) between 1959 and 1960 as a centre.

In 1961, Ray played for Tumut and played two games for NSW as a five eighth. He gained selection for the Australian team to tour New Zealand but played no tests.

In 1962, Ray joined Canterbury to become captain and five eighth of the first grade team. He captained Canterbury to win the Pre-Season Final over Western Suburbs.

After captaining the first grade side for the first nine matches, Ray lost the captaincy to Ray Gartner and only played a few more games in the centres.
