Phil Young joined Canterbury in 1971 as a half back.
The father of Luke Young, Phil played in the third grade Premiership winning team against St George.
In 1972, Phil started the season in first grade against St George but was relegated for Les Hutchings. Phil played in the reserve grade Premiership winning team against St George.
In 1973, Phil became a regular member of the first grade team and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final.
In 1974, Phil played most of the season in first grade but was relegated late in the season for Don Moseley before playing in reserve grade Preliminary Final against Easts (Roosters).
In 1975, Phil became a regular member of the reserve grade team but returned to first grade when Tim Pickup was injured and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta.
In 1976, Phil started the season in reserve grade but was recalled to first grade for a short time when Steve Mortimer was relegated.
Phil also spent time playing at five eighth and on the wing but missed out on playing the finals.
He joined Newtown in 1977 to play 16 games that season.
In 2004, Phil was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
Phil is currently the President of the Bulldogs Ambassadors Club.
