Phil Charlton joined Canterbury in 1970 as a prop forward.
The son of Ken Charlton and the brother of Tony Charlton, Phil progressed through the grades quickly to receive the opportunity to play first grade early in the season against Parramatta as a replacement forward. However Phil's initial season at the club was impacted by injury and having played just two first grade matches, he did play in the third grade Semi-Final against St George.
Phil became a regular player in reserve grade over the next five seasons, playing in the Premiership winning teams against St George in 1971 and 1972.
After playing most of the 1973 season in reserve grade, Phil played in the first grade Preliminary Final against Newtown.
In 1974, Phil was again promoted late in the season to play in the finals. Unfortunately, he missed the Grand Final against Easts (Roosters) due to appendicitis.
Phil became a regular first grade player in 1975 and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Parramatta and in 1976, he played in the Preliminary Final against Manly.
Phil was selected in the Sydney team that toured New Zealand at the end of the season.
Phil's 1977 season was interrupted by injury but he returned in 1978 to be a regular first grade player before missing selection for the Preliminary Semi-Final.
Phil joined Newtown in 1979 but retired after one game when he ruptured his achillis tendon.
Phil coached the reserve grade team from 1993 to 1995 and was also part of the support staff.
In 2004, Phil was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
In 2007, Phil was awarded Life Membership of the Football Club.
Phil was on the Football Club board from 2008-2013.
Phil is currently on the Bulldogs Ambassadors Club Committee.
