Peter Tunks played 98 games for South Sydney from 1977 to 1983 as second row forward.

In 1984, Peter joined Canterbury to become a regular prop for the next six seasons.

In 1984, Peter played for NSW before playing in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta. In 1985, Peter played for Australia. He played nine games for NSW from 1984 to 1987 and played six Tests for Australia from 1985 to 1987.

Peter played in the Premiership winning team against St George.

In 1986, Peter captained Canterbury for the first time. He captained Canterbury on 34 occasions from 1986 to 1989.

In 2004, Peter was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
