Peter Hayes joined Canterbury in 1955 as a goal kicking centre.

Peter received an early opportunity to play first grade when Billy Miller was injured in the initial game of the season.

In 1956, he became a regular in reserve grade and in 1957 had moved to full-back. In 1958, Peter commenced the season in first grade but after losing his position to Bill Petley, played in third grade as captain.
