Pat Fitzgerald joined Canterbury in 1955 as a second rower.
After missing most of 1956 and the entire 1957, Pat emerged as a regular member of the reserve grade team, playing as a prop in 1958.
He received his first grade opportunity when Alan Hockley was unavailable in the opening match of the 1958 season against Parramatta.
Pat became a regular member of the reserve grade team for the next four seasons. When Brian Davies was injured midway through 1962, Pat became a regular member of the first grade team.
In 1963, he started the season in first grade and was relegated to reserve grade for the finals where he played in Preliminary Final against South Sydney.
Pat started the 1964 season as the captain of reserve grade to complete his playing career.
