Pat English joined Canterbury in 1976 as a hooker.

In 1977, Pat became a regular hooker in the Under 23s before receiving the opportunity to play first grade against Balmain when George Peponis and Dave Allison were injured. Pat then played in the Under 23 play off in 1977.

In 1978, Pat became a regular member of the reserve grade team and in 1979, Pat played in the reserve grade Grand Final against Parramatta. In 1980 he played in the reserve grade Premiership winning team against Parramatta.

In 1981 and 1982, Pat became a regular member of the first grade team when George Peponis was injured in both seasons.

After starting the 1983 season in first grade, Pat was relegated for Billy Johnstone and finished the season as the regular hooker in reserve grade playing in the Semi-Final against St George.

In 1984, Pat joined Western Suburbs to play 11 first grade games that season.

In 2004, Pat was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
