Noel Hickey joined Canterbury in 1947 as a centre.

After playing in the semi-final in 1947, Noel was unlucky to miss the final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1948, Noel became a regular in reserve grade side and received the opportunity to play first grade as a five eighth when half back Bruce Hopkins was injured.

Noel was to play two further seasons in the lower grades but mainly as a winger.
