Neil Baker joined Canterbury in 1981 as a goal kicking five eighth.

Neil became a regular member of the reserve grade team and received the opportunity to play first grade against Easts as a replacement. He played first grade as fullback when Greg Brentnall was injured.

Neil captained the reserve grade team in the Preliminary Semi-Final against St George.

In 1982, Neil was a regular member of the reserve grade team and played first grade when Garry Hughes was injured.

In 1983, Neil was a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the reserve grade Semi-Final against St George.

In 1984, Neil joined South Sydney to play 87 games from 1984 to 1987 as five eighth.

In 1988, Neil joined Penrith to play 40 games between 1988 and 1989 mainly as a fullback.

After departing Penrith, Neil returned to Newcastle to captain-coach Wests to a Premiership in 1992.
