Matua Parkinson joined Canterbury in 1996 as a second row forward.
Matua became a regular member of the reserve grade team in 1997 and played in the Premiership winning team against Auckland as a lock.
In 1998, Matua received the opportunity to play first grade against Manly when Robert Relf was injured. He returned to reserve grade and played in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta.
In 1999, Matua joined the Auckland Blues Rugby Union team.
