Mitch Newton joined Canterbury in 1988 as a prop forward.

After starting the season late, Mitch became a regular member of the Under 21 team. In 1989, Mitch was a regular member of the Under 21 team.

In 1990, Mitch started the season in reserve grade and received the opportunity to play first grade against South Sydney as a replacement.

In 1991 he was a regular member of the reserve grade team but in 1992, Mitch became a regular replacement for the first grade team.

In 1993, Mitch returned to reserve grade and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against North Sydney before missing the rest of the finals due to injury.

In 1994, Mitch continued in reserve grade and played in the Semi-Final against St George.

In 1995, Mitch returned to first grade either as a starting prop or from the interchange and played in the Premiership winning team against Manly as an interchange player.

In 1996, Mitch became a regular starting prop in first grade and in 1997, played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Penrith from the interchange bench.

In 1998, Mitch started the season in first grade but was relegated for Steve Reardon to play the rest of the season in reserve grade where he played in the Premiership winning team against Parramatta.

In 1999, Mitch was captain of the reserve grade team and played his last game in the Semi-Final against Canberra.

Mitch is a Life Member of the Football Club and in 2004 he was nominated for the Berries to Bulldogs 70 Year Team of Champions.
