Michael Smith joined Canterbury in 1996 as a second row forward.

Starting the season late, Michael received the opportunity to play first grade against Balmain when Glen Hughes was injured. He remained a first grade replacement for the rest of the season.

In 1997, Michael started the season as a first grade replacement but was injured and returned to play in reserve grade.

In 1998, Michael played for Castleford and has remained in England for an extended career.

In 2002, Michael played his only Test for New Zealand.
