Michael Reid joined Canterbury in 1986 as a second row. Michael became a regular member of the Under 23 team.

In 1987, Michael moved to hooker and received the opportunity to play first grade against North Sydney as a replacement.

Michael became a regular member of the reserve grade team and played in the Preliminary Semi-Final against Easts (Roosters).

In 1988, Michael joined Newcastle.
